Just because Christmas and other holidays are a time for giving, it doesn’t mean you should just give anything away as a gift or have to break the bank. Most of us agonize when selecting holiday gifts for friends and family. We browse or shop for months, in search for the perfect gifts. And we still manage to find the absolute worst gifts, ever.
Please friends, a gift should make the recipient happy — or at least not sad or angry. It’s a good time to remember that gifts are a powerful form of communication and you should always ask yourself what messages you are sending out by the gifts you’ve picked.

I mean, if the saying ‘it’s the thought that counts’, sometimes you have to wonder – What were they thinking? Is this how much I matter to them? Or ‘Is this how they see me.’

Gifts can enhance connections between people and a truly bad gift, can ruin a relationship, with such an emotional impact that is remembered for decades. I bet some of us have been the recipients of some really bad gifts that has left us wondering why the gifter would ever think it would be something we’d want, need, or even like in a million years and we still remember the gift and how we felt then, till now.

So, to help you out, we’ve put together a list of what not to buy your friends, family, and loved ones this season.

  • The Gift of Art

g1

Unless someone has specifically requested a particular piece of art, it is best to not assume you know his or her taste.

  • A Framed picture of yourself

g2

Loving yourself is important, but sending framed pictures of yourself is an odd gift. A better option would be to incorporate a photograph of yourself with the holiday card. This means they don’t need to add on a new room to the house just to display your pictures.

  • Regifting Gaffes

g3Before you even think of wrapping up that awful present you’ve had hidden away, make sure you are not giving it back to the person that gave you (even if you really want to) or give someone that might know who it came from.

Unless it’s a family heirloom, most people feel belittled by a regift. Sometimes the gift itself is great, but what hurts is the knowledge that it wasn’t chosen especially for them. Or that little to no thought at all was put into the gift (and we have all been guilty of this at one point in time).

  • Thoughtless Gifts

g4

Rule Number 1: First think about the type of person your friend/family or loved one is, consider their particularities and then try to find a gift to match. Not get the tons of discounted gifts, then try and match to friends you think might like them.

  • A gift of expert advice to an Expert

Some people know a lot about a particular topic. They may excel in a sport, pride themselves on their deep knowledge of wine, arts or they could be an expert tailor. Buying an expert-related gift is chancy because they probably already own it, already know it, or really do not need it.

  • Worthless Gadget Gifts

There are a million worthless gadgets out there that you may be tempted into believing will make the perfect gift for someone on your list who has no hobbies, no particular talents and who doesn’t seem to need a thing. No doubt, such an individual is hard to buy for; find out what they like and not assume or go generic.

  • The ‘Good-Intentions’ Gifts

What you think might be filled with good intentions could ignite deep resentments. Gifts which target a specific shortcoming are generally not appreciated. Gaffes most often occur when the giver experiences a momentary deficiency of empathy. They weren’t thinking from the point of view of the recipient, but their own. This sort of mistake is easy to make during the rush and stress of the holidays.

  Such gifts could include:

    • A book or CD on how to lose weight to an overweight person.
    • Coaching tapes on how to be successful to someone who is unemployed or in a dead-end job.
    • A book on how to be a good wife to someone having marital issues.

  • Gifts with a message

Unless the person you are buying for is under the age of 16, chances are your wordy gift will end up as a dust rag. Even if after reading this, you still get an impulse to buy one, think about it for 3weeks and if the urge is still there, keep thinking until the urge is gone.

  • The Passive-Aggressive Gift

Passive aggression is hostility wrapped in soft bunting. It is a special breed of the Statement Gift, and when it is handed over, it is in effect a weapon meant to deliver blows to the recipient’s ego. It’s the season of peace, joy and happiness, let go of hostilities and pettiness and be a model Santa and not the Grinch.

  • The Non-Gift

    g10

In households with shared finances, if it was something you would have purchased anyway, it doesn’t count as a gift. Socks, frying pans, and hair brushes have all achieved the “worst gift” designation by everyone who has been at the receiving end. The worst in this category are major purchases that were made without input from the recipient and laced with a touch of the “all about me” gift.

    • The Statement Gift

Statement gifts, typically offer disapproval or some kind of judgmental commentary aimed at the recipient.  While gifts are intended to communicate a message of some sort, the story is normally one of affection and caring.

The best kinds of gifts are subtle and personal with a hint of thoughtfulness.  Make sure your gifts elicit squeals of delight, not a tight-lipped grimace trying to pass for a smile.

    Happy Holidays!

Gifts

It’s the season of giving and there is no better time to show your employees you value them and their service. I mean, how else can you increase productivity and ensure they go the extra mile, than to gift them with something appealing and functional.

The fact remains that your staff are the major drivers for the success or the bane of your business and their emotional connection to you and their daily performance determines how far they are willing to go for the survival of the business. The Happier your staff, the more successful your business will be. (And I know that for a fact).

Let me tell you a trade secret, apart from the obvious fact that giving gifts help to build a strong relationship between employees, suppliers or clients, it is also the most effective way of marketing your brand. You kill two birds with one stone. QED!

Giving tangible items as a bumper pack – the list is limitless – is less expensive than monetary incentive (truth be told, how much can you give that will be truly appreciated).

Depending on your budget and what you have access to, any of the few gifts listed below can be given as a single item or as a bumper pack.

What is Gift Giving?

Gift giving has been a long tradition that dates back thousands of years, as far back as man can remember. As human beings, we are social creatures who enjoy each other’s company and expressing our feelings through the giving of gifts.
Whether it is an expression of true love, appreciation of a job well done or just to show our gratitude for having someone as a friend, the giving of gifts is engrained into our DNA.
The giving of gifts may be one of the oldest of human activities that pre-dates civilization, today, it’s spread across all cultures around the world, from celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, offering good luck, best wishes for getting well, showing love and affection, or just saying thanks. Gifts are given to family members, friends, those we work with and even neighbors.

The Etiquette of Giving

Even when not committing egregious errors that may offend, be sure to use finesse if you want to get the most out of your gift program. There is an art to effective giving, so consider the following major issues before you go shopping:

        • Appropriateness: Care should be taken that the gift is appropriate to the business relationship. This has less to do with the naira value of business transacted, or even the amount of time one has been doing business with the recipient, than with the closeness of the relationship. If a client seems aloof and excessively businesslike, don’t try to loosen him or her up with a gift. It can backfire. With a new relationship, don’t get too personal or too lavish with the gift. Frequency of giving generally should be restricted to major holidays and special occasions. Again, be sure to avoid the impression that you’re bribing the recipient.
        • Personality: It’s great when a gift has personality, but the real issue is whether the gift reflects the personality and interests of the recipient. Is he a sports fan? What’s her favorite color?
Try to find out these kinds of things discreetly, because when you do (and your gift reflects it), the impression is that you care about the person and have taken the time to understand their style and taste.
        • Timing: The most popular times for giving, of course, are holidays. But the true champions of gift giving know that other times of the year can have a more profound personal impact on the relationship. For instance, birthday gifts are bound to impress, since they show that you’ve bothered to learn a thing or two about the recipient. Important dates, such as the anniversary of a new job or the day you initiated a business relationship, may be good occasions for a gift. You can also mark such events as a promotion, the birth of a child, or completion of an important project. Whether you stick to established holidays and impersonal occasions or get into the personal life of the recipient depends on the nature of the relationship. It may seem slightly presumptuous, or even intrusive, to choose the wrong occasion for a gift.
        • Presentation: The best gifts are heart-felt and show it. Special care should be taken in preparing the gift. Invest in some nice wrapping paper, and take the time to compose a personal, handwritten card. This can be as important as the gift itself, since your message to the recipient conveys your intentions and sincerity. Then there’s the issue of whether to mail it or present it in person. Mailing can reduce any feelings of obligation on the part of the recipient, and it can provide some unexpected pleasure in a routine work day. If the relationship warrants it, mailing to the person’s home may add a personal touch, particularly when the gift commemorates a personal occasion like a birthday.
        • Customizing: To brand or not to brand, that is a key question. For many businesses, customized gifts keep the company name in the minds of recipients. When the item is a practical one that’s likely to be used every day – such as a calendar, coffee mug, or pen – this amounts to free daily advertising. But there’s a tackiness quotient to consider. These items may make great trade show premiums or leave-behinds, but customized items could never be considered personal, deeply heartfelt gifts.

In general, avoid obvious self-promotion when giving expensive gifts or any time you want to leave the impression that the gift is coming personally from you.

Whether you are looking for elegant executive gifts, presents for your business associates or employees, we have varied products you can choose from; what better way can show you care.

There you have it. What do you think?

Most people and even businesses mix up and use one to mean the other when describing Business Gifts and Promotional Gifts.
While business gifts and promotional items are both used as marketing tools, they do so in very different ways. They have been implemented by companies large and small as a more cost-effective marketing alternative.

Though they both serve a good purpose for any business, but in order to implement them effectively, you need to clearly understand the differences between them.
In this article, we would be talking about both – what they mean and when to give them.

Business Gifts

What it means?
These are valuable item(s) offered without obligation to selected recipients by a company, as an expression of appreciation or goodwill. Unlike promotional items, business gifts generally do not carry an advertising message but may instead be personalized with the recipient’s name.

Intangible business gifts, such as weekend trip, lunch voucher etc now comprise of a significant portion of corporate gift-giving. Most businesses have established policies for giving of business gifts.
It is important to be thoughtful when choosing gifts for your clients, since the aim is to show your appreciation to your client the best and cost effective way you can.

Business Gifts highlight the significance of the personal relationship itself, rather than on the day-to-day transactions of products and services; and it elevates the relationship between the company and the client.
Thoughtful gifts also have a natural reciprocal quality to them; when someone is appreciative of you, it elicits a natural response and builds the foundation for customer loyalty.

A business gift may or may not be branded since it depends on the type of gift and to whom it’s being given.
It is not unusual for companies to gift clients with some type of token or gesture of appreciation when the customer has generated an equitable amount of sales over the past calendar year.

When to give?
Many companies choose the December holiday season as the ideal time to send a business gift to each client who meets the criteria established by them.

Promotional Gifts

What it means?
Promotional gifts reach a much wider audience and are targeted towards customers and consumers in order to increase brand awareness and promote customer loyalty. Many companies implement promotional items as a way to simply make consumers more aware of what their business is all about in the hopes of increasing their customer base. Other companies will use promotional items as a way to market a specific range or product.
Promotional items have the potential to act as ongoing adverts, which is why the item itself needs to be the right choice.
It is important that promotional items are practical and that recipients can use it on a daily basis. The more promotional items are exposed to a variety of different people, the better the chances are of some taking note.

Promotional gifts are tangible gifts and range from pens, mugs, power banks, mouse etc. Because of its nature, the promotional gifts are usually packaged together to make it more meaningful.

When to give?
There is no specific time earmarked for promotional gifts. It can be given any time during the course of the year. Though most businesses now choose to give mostly during December as an end of the year appreciative token.
The flexibility or versatility of promotional gifts makes it an ideal marketing tool adopted to create brand awareness/visibility.

As can be seen here, corporate gifts and promotional items serve two different purposes both with equal value.
If you are considering utilizing these marketing tools, be sure to think carefully about what it is you want to achieve. Are you looking to widen your customer base, or do you want to boost staff morale and strengthen current working relationships? The more you think through, plan and strategize what it is you want to achieve, the more these marketing tools can be of benefit to you and your company.

And there is no law that says you cannot do both, if your budget can accommodate it.

So, what are you giving out this festive season? Time is of essence. Remember, saying ‘thank you’ with your gifts is considered good business etiquettes.

At this time of the year, Corporate Gift Giving is an ideal way to show your customers how much you value and appreciate them. It is also an effective means of strengthening corporate relationships, creating goodwill that will have measurable effects on Customer loyalty, growth and referrals.

While holiday gift giving is still important, consider giving corporate gifts this season as well. As a business you will reap huge rewards with just a few items.

Some of the top benefits include:

  • Advertise your business

All organizations depend on advertising in order to thrive. Distributing promotional corporate gifts is essential to this growth process. When a client receives a gift with your company’s name and contact information on it, they will remember your business every time they use it. Branded gifts are appreciated by your clients, and act as brand awareness for your organization.

  • Reward Your Customers

Building strong relationships with your customers is a huge advantage of corporate gift giving. Your most valuable clients deserve to be thanked for the business they bring to your company. Personalized corporate gifts are most appropriate to give your top customers, as they best represent your close business relationship.

  • Build Loyalty

The act of corporate gift giving ensures a positive lasting impression upon the customer and shows them that you haven’t forgotten them and in return that they shouldn’t forget you – A gift that will allow you to be remembered long after your competitor is forgotten. The empathetic nature of your act shows that you made the effort to personalize to some degree, the selection of a particular gift for them.

There are tons of customized promotional gifts such as power banks, flash drives, coffee mugs, desk accessory, desk lamps, calendars, diaries, key rings, pens etc. that can serve as excellent corporate gifts. You can also personalize your gifts with different branding methods such as screen printing, pad printing, embossing, foiling, embroidery, engraving etc.

Since corporate gifts help to enhance business, attract the attention of clients and increase brand awareness, you must always print your company logo on the promotional items for brand recognition and if you have a catchy tagline, print it too. If you want to show more sincerity and make them feel extra special, especially your top clients, you can give a customized gift with a personalized message.
Because they come in different designs and styles, corporate gifts are a sure way to achieve new business heights.

Above all, it is vital to note that the corporate gifts must be in line with your client’s tastes, preferences and living standards. Don’t give a Gift that won’t be appreciated or functional.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelamah, said that with the latest foreign investments in printing, Nigerians should have no reason to travel abroad to print books and other documents.

Enelamah, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Aminu Bisalla, said this at the 4th Digital Print Solution Expo on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the Ministry supported Skysat technologies for its contribution in industralising the economy and promoting SMEs in the area of digital printing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Skysat technologies is known for its cutting edge digital printing solutions.

“it is not unusual to hear people say they are traveling to Dubai, China or the United States to print their books, magazines and sensitive documents.

“This inevitably leads to the flight of scarce foreign exchange and even more worrisome; it creates jobs in those countries, while the printing industry in Nigeria grasps for breathe.

“Therefore this exhibition by Skysat demostrates that Nigeria entrepreneurs and investors in print business now have access to the latest technology and solutions for office documentation and printing.

“I dare to say that in a very short time, there won’t be any need for Nigerians to travel abroad for any kind of printing work, when they can source it cheaper at home,’’ he said.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, commended Skysat for supporting 500 small and medium-scale entreprises and creating over 2,000 jobs in the country.

Mohammed, represented by Mr. Charles Ojugbana, a Director at the Ministry of Information and Culture, said with the investments by Skysat, Nigerians entrepreneurs now have access to the latest technologies in digital printing.

“I appeal to members of the business community and government institutions to increase patronage of local print shops and press, especially those with cutting edge technology that is exhibited here today.

“By doing this, it will help to strengthen the printing indutsry, reduce the burden on scarce foreign exchange, promote FDIs and create jobs for teeming unemployed Nigerian,’’ he said.

The Managing Director, Skysat technologies said that the company was dedicated to providing cutting edge techonology in digital printing to the Nigerian Market.

He said that the company brought in 50 seasoned engineers trained around the world, to ensure technology transfers to interested Nigerians in the industry.

NAN reports that for the next three days, the exhibition will showcase digital printing solutions for various sectors of the economy such as education, finance, industrial packaging and commercial printing.
